'Design Technologies for the Built Environment'

Speakers: David Fano, Federico Negro, Steve Sanderson Founders, CASE Design New York

CASE is a design technology consultancy based in NYC. We subscribe to the idea that in order for the AEC industry to change, we must affect processes, rather than produce effects. Our particular interests are centered on the way that information technologies are poised to fundamentally transform the way that buildings are conceived and realized. We found that in order to have the impact that we desired, we would need to step outside the boundaries of traditional practice. This led to the formation of CASE and our attempt to establish a new service model within the industry. We concentrate our efforts on practice and the education of future industry leaders.

Our Thinking focuses on the intersection of design and technology. We combine a designer’s sensibility, a team’s goals, a project’s demands and an owner’s vision to create a viable technological strategy that fosters innovation.

Our Strategy is based on Building Information Modeling. BIM is not a software, it is a methodology. The application of BIM strategies fosters collaboration among team members and greater coordination of a building’s intricate systems; allowing professionals to focus more time on a building’s design and realization.

Our Experience has seen us implement BIM strategies across a diverse set of projects, including museums, sports facilities, commercial facilities, corporate offices, residential buildings, and city infrastructure for high profile clients and designers. Usual pain points such as trades coordination and document management, geometry definition and rationalization, building physics and analysis, estimating and value engineering, staffing and team planning, workflow and documentation standards are among our most common applications of these methods.

Open Conversation... We invite you to join us in conversation about these methodologies in practice and the academy.

Speakers David Fano established CASE Design in 2008. He previously worked at SHoP Architects, where he was Director of Technology Research. His responsibilities included managing technology R&D initiatives, working with project teams to ensure the successful implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM), and developing "direct to fabrication" initiatives with software manufacturers and fabricators through the use of BIM. Since 2006, David has been an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation where he teaches Meshing, Re-thinking BIM, and Orchestration, focused on exploring how technology can transform design processes.

Prior to founding CASE, Federico Negro managed the design and construction of the 290 Mulberry Street Condominiums, SHoP Architect's pilot BIM project. His responsibilities, beyond those immediate to the project, included the strategic planning and implementation of firm-wide BIM standards. Federico's focus is on the use of design technologies for coordination, management and implementation of specialty fabrication components and construction. He has collaborated on design studios and seminars at Yale University's School of Architecture and Columbia University's GSAPP, as well as several publications on integrated design, including "SHoP Works, Collaborazioni costruttive in digitale" of the IT Revolution in Architecture series.

Steve Sanderson is a founding partner of CASE Design. Prior to CASE, Steve was the Director of Design Technology at SHoP Architects where he was responsible for introducing Parametric Modeling, Computational Design, and Environmental Analysis into SHoP’s design and delivery process, establishing the firm as an industry thought leader. He has taught design studios and seminars at Columbia University’s GSAPP and Yale University’s School of Architecture and speaks internationally on the role of technology in design innovation.
