SOM and CASE Launch AEC Industry's First Crowdsourced, Web-based Resource for Sharing Innovative Tools and Technologies

AEC-APPS democratizes how building-industry tools are created, discovered, and shared

April 15, 2013 New York, NY - AEC-APPS (aec-apps.com) is the first Web-based library of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) applications built by and for digital tool users and toolmakers, who share a common interest in the evolution of innovative technologies. Conceived, designed, and maintained by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (www.som.com) and CASE (www.case-inc.com ) to lead the industry toward a model of collaborative knowledge and technology exchange, AEC-APPS connects tools, from snippets of code to established software platforms, and people, from educators and students to practitioners and hobbyists. Part Wikipedia™, part GitHub™, AEC-APPS is a not-for-profit online community that fosters knowledge sharing and problem solving across disciplines, software platforms, geographic locations, and experience levels.

“Innovation in digital tools is changing the nature of practice, and it’s being driven by many players in different parts of the AEC industry, but they are not often aware of one another’s efforts,” notes SOM’s Technical Director Nicholas Holt. “We saw an opportunity to bridge the awareness gap by creating a new kind of social-media hub for the building industry, where tool users and toolmakers could share ideas on equal footing, from students scripting in universities, to entrepreneurial incubators in the basements of Brooklyn, to the developers at Dassault, Bentley, Autodesk, McNeel, and other major contributors.”

“Developers are constantly creating new tools and applications to improve building design, construction and management. The pace at which these tools are released is rapidly increasing and frankly, overwhelming even for the most savvy of tool users,” CASE Partner David Fano observes. “With this wealth of knowledge scattered all over the Internet, AEC-APPS will exist as the primary resource for the AEC industry to not only stay up-to-date with the latest technology but to evolve their own practices as well.”

In the constantly expanding universe of digital tools dominated by established developers, opportunities for sharing practitioner-driven innovation are limited. Populated by a diverse, ‘maker-driven’ user group, AEC-APPS’s crowdsourcing initiative democratizes tool creation and selection, allowing designers to control their own tools and independent toolmakers to compete on a level playing field. Membership is free and open to the public.

AEC-APPS has three primary components: User Community, App Kits, and Apps. AEC-APPS’s registered users are architects, engineers, contractors, allied design professionals, students, academics, researchers, computer scientists, artists, software developers, and enthusiasts. They post, rate, review, describe, and discuss apps to leverage existing tools and collaborate on the creation and sharing of new ones. The community is largely self-regulating so that no one entity, group, or tool is artificially elevated.

Each user has an App Kit that can be browsed by other users and followers in the community, in which they collect and share applications. Apps, which are presented in a democratically crowd-sourced hierarchy, range from commercially marketed programs to user-created scripts, assets, and utilities. This toolbox approach encourages exploration of existing technologies and provides a shared space for development, customization, and creation of new tools.

Following a four-month beta period, AEC-APPS currently hosts more than five hundred users who have posted some eight hundred apps for use in the design, construction, and operation of buildings, from enterprise software to plugins and other tools.

About Skidmore, Owings & Merrill
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) is one of the leading architecture, interior design, engineering, and urban-planning firms in the world, with a 75-year reputation for design excellence and a portfolio that includes some of the most important architectural accomplishments of the 20th and 21st centuries. Since its inception, SOM has been a leader in the research and development of specialized technologies, new processes and innovative ideas, many of which have had a palpable and lasting impact on the design profession and the physical environment. The firm’s longstanding leadership in design and building technology has been honored with more than 1,600 awards for quality, innovation, and management. The American Institute of Architects has recognized SOM twice with its highest honor, the Architecture Firm Award—in 1962 and again in 1996. The firm maintains offices in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Mumbai, and Abu Dhabi.

About CASE
CASE exists where building and technology intersect. They combine their experiences as architects, engineers, projects managers, software developers and educators with a passion for technology to improve the way buildings are designed, built and operated. CASE is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) and integrated-practice consultancy based in New York City, and provides strategic advising to building design professionals, contractors and owners seeking to supplant traditional project delivery methods through technology-driven process innovation. Recognized as industry-thought leaders on the integration of technology and BIM principles, CASE helps the building industry identify, implement and manage the technologies and business practices that enable more effective coordination, communication and collaboration.

CASE Apps: Free Migrate Parameter to Parameter

Have you ever needed to schedule an item of data that Revit would not let you? This is a common hurdle for many and now there's a free tool that you can use to get around this. Common uses include migrating Wall Base Constraint Element Names (Levels) into a schedulable parameter. I'm sure you guys will find lots of uses for this one.

CASE Apps: Free Family Exporter

We are all aware that Revit can export families to a library, but the control that you get is less than sufficient for large models. This exporter will organize your families into subdirectories matching the names of the category that the family originated from. This tool obviously will not be able to export system families or in-place families of any kind :(
CASE Is Hiring Smart People

Do you love figuring out the building process? Do you REALLY love figuring out how to use technology to build better? Do you live or want to live in New York City? If you answered “You’re Damn Right I DO!!” to all of these questions then we want to talk to you about working at CASE.

Here is what we are looking for: folks that are critical thinkers about process, folks that work smarter not harder (we need to save time for Ping Pong, Video games and that wonderful thing called the weekend) and most importantly, process oriented thinkers. Even though we are NOT a design firm, we need people that think like designers.

Right now we are looking for a person that enjoys sharing knowledge. Were you that person in school or at work that was always excited to show people a better way to do something? At some point did you find yourself thinking, ” I should just run a workshop and teach people how to do this stuff?” We need people who are excited to get in a room with a group of leading professionals (our clients) and help teach them the processes and tools to deliver amazing projects.

So, if you want to work with really fun, smart, exciting people and with the world’s best Architecture, Engineering and Construction firms you should drop what you’re doing and send us an email at I_want_to_work@case-inc.com with a brief note describing how you meet the qualifications above, a resume and some work samples.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Try FormIt to win Revit!

DesignByMany has announced its latest challenge sponsored by Autodesk! This challenge will take advantage of the new FormIt iPad app released by Autodesk at this year's Autodesk University.
Link to challenge: http://www.designbymany.com/challenge/formit-university

	Description:
The challenge is to design a school campus in Mumbai using the new Autodesk FormIt iPad App. This slightly primitive but full of potential school campus, dubbed FormIt University, will consist of four classroom buildings, a lecture hall, a gym, an administration building, and parking. Each building/program must be within the required square footage requirements given below. Floor heights will not be assumed, so therefore they must be set for each mass/building/support space for judges to check for total floor area requirements. The campus is also wanting to stand out above the rest and desires a distinctive landmark. The design of the landmark is completely open to interpretation, but must be separate from any other building and distinctly different.

	About FormIt:
The FormIt mobile app was just released at Autodesk University in November and is the first of its kind. FormIt helps you capture building design concepts digitally anytime, anywhere ideas strike. Use real-world site information to help create forms in context and support early design decisions with real building data. Experience a continuous Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow by synchronizing designs in the cloud for further refinement using Autodesk Revit software products and other applications.

	Objectives:

Create compelling and beautiful architectural design concepts and form creation.

Remain within defined Program area requirements.

Maximize tool set utilization. (Special attention will be given to those who take advantage of all the tools available in FormIt)

Coming Soon: AEC-APPS.COM Private Beta

Great software is now being put to market every day by both major companies and independent developers alike. AEC-APPS.com is CASE and SOM's answer to this growing industry problem: too many applications impacting the AEC industry and not enough time to keep track of them all.

AEC-APPS.com brings order to this overflowing cornucopia of tools by helping users find apps specifically for the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings - from the largest of enterprise software to the tiniest of plugins. Members can add apps from the database to their personal App Kit, a software tool chest that is public to other members. App Kits allow users to stay in the loop on what software is important to them, follow the apps their industry peers are using, and also find new tools that might otherwise remain lost in the internet ocean.

Head on over and sign up for our private beta at aec-apps.com!

Import OpenNURBS for Vasari is here!

CASE is excited to announce the Beta release of Import OpenNURBS for Autodesk’s Vasari Conceptual Modeling Software. The Beta is available for a limited time through the CASE Apps Add-in manager found at the CASE Apps website.
The Import OpenNURBS add-in facilitates early-stage interoperability by allowing designers to import conceptual geometry from Rhino into Autodesk Vasari. Unlike importing and linking with other file formats, Import OpenNURBS will translate geometries as native Vasari elements to give designers the flexibility to further develop their designs using Vasari’s modeling and analysis features.
The Vasari Add-in reads the OpenNURBS file format (Rhino 4.0 3DM) and uses custom algorithms to reconstruct geometry using Vasari API methods. Currently, the Add-in supports a broad range of OpenNURBS geometry. At this stage, some geometry support has yet to be implemented but we are committed to expanding the functionality as new capabilities become available for OpenNURBS and the Vasari API.
We hope you enjoy testing the new Import OpenNURBS Beta for Autodesk Vasari... and we hope you can provide us with valuable feedback about the tool!

dRofus 1.5 beta Released!

dRofus 1.5 beta
PRESS RELEASE

dRofus – now with a new and powerful, built-in IFC model server !

Our Project & Enterprise customers now have access to the latest version of the dRofus beta. This version allows them to load all their design files into a model server for instantaneous visualization and program validation. And, believe it or not - this feature is provided without any additional license cost.

This latest beta has an embedded, special edition, model server from Jotne EPM, - one of the leading providers in the world of this technology. (http://www.epmtech.jotne.com/jotne-epm-technology-as.241684.no.html)

This makes it easy to visualize and validate a project across multiple design models. For the first time, users of dRofus have access to the latest design models and validation reports between program and design without any additional file handling. This allows for the opportunity for several new and improved work flows, better quality control across models and increased interaction with the stakeholders of the projects.

Embedding a model server in dRofus also opens a large market among owners who wants to export project requirements and validate the design entirely through the use of an open data standard, IFC.

This new functionality in dRofus can change the way the industry thinks and works regarding the relationship between program and design, as all parties gets simultaneous access to the same updated data and design models throughout the project.

You can download a short presentation of how the model server works here.

dRofus with model server will be presented at Autodesk University and Ecobuild later this year.

Trace - a new AEC app!

New app, Trace, is an evolution of design process, enabling the development of ideas, free thinking and communication amongst a global community of designers and creators.

New York, September 25, 2012 - The Morpholio Project announces the launch of its second app, simply called Trace. The app explores the role of technology in the conceptual phase of the design workflow through a digital version of trace paper, and fosters communication amongst a global design culture. Trace, essential to any design or creative process, allows users to instantly draw on top of imported images or background templates, layering comments or ideas to generate immediate, intelligent sketches that are easy to circulate.
The uniqueness of Trace is most visible in two primary modes. One is communication, in which the user can simply trace over something in order to give feedback or convey information quickly, and graphically. The second is idea exploration. "You are plugging yourself into a recursive feedback loop, as you iteratively build up an idea, taking several passes at it," says co-creator Mark Collins. Both allow creative cultures to maintain conceptual thinking as well as critical feedback throughout the design process.
Created by architects, Trace addresses a number of questions about how the proliferation of device culture, social networking, and cloud technology are changing the way designers work and connect on a daily basis. It has been predicted that in 2020, there will be 50 billion mobile internet connections worldwide, the equivalent of seven devices per person. It is crucial that experimentation and research that harnesses the power of these devices, and makes tools specifically for the design and creative fields, occur in tandem with this rapid evolution of culture and process.

Time Tested Process + New Technology
What are the origins of an idea? How do we layer thoughts to create a generative workflow? How do we use memory as a way of distilling the most important decisions? Those that have ever used trace paper know that the drawings you create are unique in multiple ways. "The layers of paper literally act like a brain." says Collins, "They allow for remembering (by retracing) and forgetting (by adding new layers)." "These sketches are indebted to the many layers of thought from which they evolve, and inherently become a drawing that represents the sum of your most important ideas." says Co-Creator Jeffrey Kenoff. "For any creative culture, drawing on trace is just a different act, serving as a tool for generating ideas, communicating feedback and allowing one to truly think freely."

Other Evolutions in Design Culture
In the architectural world, trace can also be seen as an antidote to the prevailing digital model based design process, including parametric modeling and BIM (Building Information Modeling). The ease of creating automated or data based models can lead to a bypassing of crucial steps in the conceptual process, particularly if forced to be far too specific, far too early. Design tools should dis-inhibit through freedom and flexibility - something most CAD tools could strive further towards. It is a goal of the Morpholio Project to make software that opens up exploration and super-charges the creative brain, keeping constant the various streams of valuable feedback. "The emphasis is on design processes that are reflective and conceptual versus merely iterative." says Co-Creator Anna Kenoff. Trace argues that it is valuable to take sketches out of CAD programs, draw on top of them; analyzing intention, concept, or diagram, and then plug them back in. "Whereas BIM software improves production optimization, the Trace software is about assisting and evolving design process traditions by exploring new relationships between brain, hand, and technology." says Co-Creator Toru Hasegawa.

How Trace Works
The Trace App is beautifully simple, intelligently clean and familiar in its canary yellow background. It begins with a single page on which to sketch and allows for a variety of underlays, including templates, photos, or any imagery pulled from the cloud. From the first line it provides effortless access to a variety of simple functions. The key function however is the "New Trace Layer" button, which allows a user to take their sketch and add another sheet, then another, and another until the idea or sketch is built to its final stages. With each layer the user can adjust the opacity to either highlight or hide the information behind it. "Tracing over something is absolutely the foundation of the app," says Hasegawa, "Layers of trace paper are not the same as "layers" in Photoshop or other tools. Here, they are the stacking of ideas, as opposed to the organizing of files."
In addition to using trace to build an idea, the app simplifies many other forms of feedback in the design process. The software imagines gathering information such as field conditions, construction photos, contact sheets, or sourcing imagery, and streamlining the process of editing, commenting and communicating instantly in sketches with an efficiency that words alone cannot achieve. Trace will also be integrated with the Morpholio app which works off the portfolio model to create an interactive platform in which to present, share and critique imagery. Morpholio's groundbreaking "Eye Time" functions combine with a global community of users to provide invaluable feedback on work shared through its variably public arenas: Crit, Pinup, and Community. Trace expands upon Morpholio's notion that that feedback is the most invaluable and generative resource for designers, and further propels crucial design processes into the cloud era.

About
In February 2011 a group of architects, and academics began The Morpholio Project with a small collection of collaborators. The experiment first produced the Morpholio app, which now includes nearly 10,000 designers and members of other visual disciplines such as photography, graphic arts, film, and television. Feedback from every user has influenced the process, goals, and definition of the project. "The Morpholio Project is first, and foremost an experiment in distributed intelligence," says Co-Creator, Mark Collins. "By leveraging the "wisdom of crowds" every designer can see and understand how his or her work is experienced by others".
The project relies on a robust Advisory Council, of nearly 200 members, representing a range of studios, and universities worldwide including both students and professors from Columbia, Harvard, London's Architectural Association, and The School of Visual Arts. In addition, the project has received the support of Herman Miller, Dyson, and 3Form as sponsors. The software evolves with each new member and collaborator.
The Morpholio Project has ambitious goals. We hope that together with our community we can globalize critique, create horizontal platforms for collaboration and truly reimagine the portfolio as a design utility. Morpholio Beta 1.3 and Morpholio Trace are both now available for download in Apple's App Store, and accessible via MyMorpholio.com.
Revit LT Announced!

Autodesk has announced the release of Revit LT. This will surely change the way small offices run allowing them to work and participate in the BIM workflow. Revit LT come loaded with all the great BIM capabilities of Revit, but at a price point more affordable to small firms. A video promoting Revit LT is here, and the annoucement from Autodesk is below.

“Autodesk Revit LT reflects our commitment to provide architects, designers and building professionals, particularly those in small firms, the tools they need to ease the transition to get started with—and take advantage of—a BIM workflow,” said Amar Hanspal, Autodesk senior vice president, information modeling products. “With Revit LT, customers can deliver higher-quality, more accurate designs and documentation—allowing them to bring projects to market faster and save time and money.”
Autodesk Revit LT is built on the Revit platform for BIM and allows users to create designs efficiently with 3D, real-world building objects to produce reliable, coordinated documentation faster. Revit-based applications help deliver better coordination and quality, and can contribute to higher profitability for architects, design professionals and the rest of the building team. Some of the benefits of Revit LT include:

http://www.autodesk.com/flashassets/staticassets/altmasthead_v2/images/b...); ">
Work more efficiently with a single, coordinated model that allows users to concurrently design and document building projects. Autodesk Revit LT automatically manages iterative changes to building models throughout the documentation process. As a result, a consistent representation of the building is maintained, helping to improve drawing coordination and reducing errors.

http://www.autodesk.com/flashassets/staticassets/altmasthead_v2/images/b...); ">
Design and visualize in 3D. Revit LT allows users to see their designs virtually, improving their understanding of the building and its spaces, and helping them communicate design ideas to clients more clearly and effectively.

http://www.autodesk.com/flashassets/staticassets/altmasthead_v2/images/b...); ">
Create photorealistic renderings in the cloud. Users who purchase Autodesk Subscription with Revit LT can render in the cloud directly from the Revit LT interface, enabling them to produce compelling, photorealistic visualizations without tying up their desktop.

http://www.autodesk.com/flashassets/staticassets/altmasthead_v2/images/b...); ">
Exchange designs in the DWG or RVT file formats. Produce designs in the DWG file format, and experience fluid file exchange with project team members using other Autodesk Revit software applications.

http://news.autodesk.com/news/autodesk/20120905005613/en/Autodesk-Announces-Autodesk-Revit-LTMore from Autodesk...

Timber Roof Framing & Structure Generators for Revit

The Timber Roof Framing Extension and Structure Generator Extension are now avaialble for Revit 2013! You can download them on the Subscription Center.

From Bim and Beam:

"Roof Framing Extensions for Autodesk Revit 2013 software applications is comprised of two extensions that help automate modeling of roofs in Autodesk Revit software.
The Rafter Framing extension enables the definition and generation of various types of “A” frame roof models.

Another extension creates truss roof systems.

Structural elements are created based on a selected Revit native roof object. Generated timber roof structures can be exported to Autodesk® Robot® Structural Analysis Professional software to perform further structural analysis and design tasks.

Structure Generator Extension for Autodesk Revit 2013 extension helps in creating different variants of architectural models and verifying them from structural point of view. The extension helps to coordinate models between the architect and structural engineer and can help reduce the number of changes required in the model during the later phases of design."

Grasshopper 0.9.0005 Released!

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A new version of Grasshopper has been released. It has been over 6 months since the last release and this one is loaded with fixes and new features. As always, it has its bugs so use with caution. Be on the lookout for some videos covering the new features and frequently asked questions! Below are some notes from David Rutten outlining the nitty grity details of the 3 main changes.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Clusters have been rewritten.
Notes from David Rutten:
Clusters in Grasshopper 0.9.0005
Clusters have been rewritten from scratch (again), though this time there are fewer visible changes.
Note that clusters created with Grasshopper 0.8.0066 and earlier are not the same objects as clusters
created with 0.9+. They can co-exist but all the improvements only pertain to clusters made with 0.9+
The three basic features that were missing before are: referencing, entanglement and editing. It is
now possible to have a cluster which references a file on the disk. When that file is modified, the
cluster can be updated. However clustera maintains a copy of the reference file at all times, so
it's possible to retain cluster functionality even though the file has changed. It's possible to
reference *.gh/*.ghx files, but here is a new cluster file format called *.ghcluster which also stores
additional cluster information such as author details, passwords and it is partially encrypted when
a password has been defined.

When a cluster is copied within a single document, the two instances of the cluster will be entangled.
Whenever you change one of them, it will also affect the other. Entanglement does not work across
file boundaries though, so clusters which have been copied to different gh/ghx files -even if that
file is still loaded- will not be affected by a change. The logic behind cluster-entanglement is as
follows:
    - Every cluster has an ID. This ID is created randomly whenever a new cluster is made from scratch.
    - Whenever a cluster is saved to a file, the ID is also stored in that file, so IDs are retained
      during save/open and copy/paste.
    - Whenever a cluster is copied, the copy will inherit the same ID.
    - When a cluster is modified, it will also modify all entangled clusters in the same document
that have the same ID. Then, all these clusters will be assigned a new random ID (but the same
one for all of them). This way there is no conflict when an unmodified instance of a cluster is
   pasted back into a document.
Clusters can now be password protected. Passwords do not prevent a cluster from being used, only from
being changed or opened. Protection is about as solid as I can make it given the circumstances of a
non-obfuscated Grasshopper.dll and the necessity to store password hashes in the same file as the
cluster object. The only way your password can become compromised is via a dictionary attack. It is
easier however for an informed programmer to steal the cluster document. It is not possible to protect
against this because Grasshopper always needs to able to decrypt a cluster whenever a file is opened.
Passwords are always assigned to all the instances of a particular cluster in the same file.

When a cluster is 'opened up', a new document will be loaded into the canvas. This document knows it
came from a cluster and the Grasshopper main menu will reflect this as well. The cluster input hook
objects in these files will be filled up with the data from the original cluster object, to at least
provide a partial preview of changes being made. When such a subsidiary document is saved, the
original cluster will be updated and the file containing the original cluster will be loaded back
into the canvas. When a cluster document is being edited, there will be a cluster icon on the canvas
that provides some useful features.
There is no autosave for cluster editing, it is impossible to implement this unless I completely
rewrite the way autosave works and the way clusters are (de)serialized.

Since it is now possible that two or more documents are associated with each other (I.e. the document
which contains the original cluster object and the document which is used to edit the cluster) the
close/save logic is a lot more complex than it used to be pre-0.9. When you close a document, all
subsidiary documents will also be closed. You will be asked for confirmation if one of those
subsidiaries contains unsaved changes. If you save a document, all subsidiary documents will also be
saved.

	    - Clusters can not yet be exploded. This feature will be added someday soon.
    - Clusters do not like to have Text Panels as input or output objects. I do not know why yet,
   but I'm on the case.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Autosave has been addressed.
Notes from David Rutten:
AutoSave and Recovery in 0.9.0005
AutoSave files are now handled differently. They are all stored in a single Grasshopper autosave
folder (accessible via the Grasshopper File→Special Folders→AutoSave menu). The name of each
autosave file is a hash of the original filename+location and therefore not humanly readable
(4F00D542-B800-8BA6-9811-AE7CEC6DD16C.gh for example).
When a new file is opened and a matching autosave file is found in the AutoSave folder, a message
will pop up offering this information along with three options:

1. You can choose to open the autosave file instead of the original file, this will not
overwrite the original file until the file is saved for the first time. Basically, the
autosave file *thinks* it is the original file.
2. You can also save the autosave file under a different name, after which the original
   file is opened.
This is obviously the safest approach, as no data is lost or in danger of being overwritten.
3. Ultimately, you can choose to ignore the autosave file and just open the original file.
In this last case the autosave file is actually moved into the recycle bin before a new
autosave file would overwrite it, so it is not in fact lost forever.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Data Matching has been redesigned:
Notes from David Rutten:
New Data Matching Behaviour in 0.9.0005
Data Matching has changed because (A) there was a bug under certain conditions and (B) I wanted to
make it more economical with regards to data path growth. The new logic is roughly as follows:
First a master input parameter is identified. At the moment, it is the parameter with the longest
path length. The amount of paths doesn't matter. Input parameters that have Tree access are never
Master parameters (unless absolutely no other parameter is available) and List parameters have lower
priority than Item parameters. In future versions it will probably become possible to assign a custom
input as master. This however is an expert user function and I want to post-pone adding it as long
as possible in order for the default behaviour to be tested and improved.

If all input parameters are list parameters, output paths are no longer grown. I.e. The Reverse List
component should output the exact same data tree structure as it gets.
The master parameter might not be the parameter with the most branches. It is therefore possible
that we run out of defined paths before the component is done computing. If this happens, the last
index of the last available path in the master parameter is incremented on each iteration:

Input  A = {0;0} {0;1} {0;2}
Input  B = {0;1;0}
Output C = {0;1;0} {0;1;1} {0;1;2}
A has a maximum path length of 2, B has a maximum path length of 3, B is therefore the Master
parameter. However we need three unique output paths since A provides three paths, so {0;1;1} and
{0;1;2} are made up on the spot.

It is also no longer possible to apply 'Shortest List' and 'Cross Reference' options to components.
Old components that had these options set still work like they did before, but that should be considered
legacy support. Instead, there are now three components in the Sets tab, List panel called
'Cross Reference', 'Short List', 'Long List' that basically provide the old functionality with a lot of
additional flexibility and options.
I'll put a post on the FAQ forum explaining how these components work and what all the options mean.
